Nyrstar is committed to continual improvement in its environmental performance.
Our aim is to minimize the environmental impact of both our production processes and our products. We will conduct our operations in compliance with all relevant environmental regulations, licenses and legislation.
We intend to apply similar standards to all assets wherever they are located, with the aim of minimizing any harm to people and the environment.
We identify, monitor and manage environmental risks arising from our operations and have formal site environmental management systems externally certified to ISO14001 to ensure appropriate focus and integration of environmental issues in our business.
The key environmental issues for our sites reflect, in general, the long site histories and ongoing changes in regulatory standards. These issues relate essentially to the remediation of historical soil and groundwater contamination, by-product and waste management, upgrade of pollution control equipment for air and water emissions and upgrade of facilities to reduce fugitive emissions to air and reduce future soil contamination.
Zinc production is an energy intensive industry, so energy efficiency is important to us and we are putting formal processes in place to assess ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint. Other improvement initiatives relate to improving our water-use efficiency and reducing the amount of wastes to landfill.
We have a number of projects underway to minimise the environmental impact of both our production processes and our products. For details visit our Case Studies section.
