Nyrstar and REACH

REACH is the European regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. It came into effect on June 1st, 2007 for all European Union member states.

REACH’s objective is to streamline and improve the legislation on chemicals, while placing greater responsibility on industry as a whole to manage the environmental and health risks and provide appropriate safety information.

Companies manufacturing and/or importing chemical substances into the European Union and European Economic Area at an annual volume above one ton, have to register the substances at the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), unless the substance is explicitly exempted from REACH. Producing or importing chemical substances will only be allowed if they have been pre-registered by a set deadline.

How we comply with the EU REACH regulations

Being absolutely committed to safer products and processes, we fully endorse the basic principles of the REACH regulation.

We have registered all of the higher volume substances we manufacture in or import into the EU by the 1 December 2010 deadline. We will register other substances by June 2013 or either June 2018 in accordance with the REACH timetable and requirements.

As part of our REACH implementation, we transfer relevant information to and from our customers, including use, exposure and risk management measures at both the customers’ and their downstream users’ facilities.

Nyrstar is an active member of several REACH consortia. They ensure consistency within the European non-ferrous metals industry regarding the practical implementation of the REACH requirements, information exchange and composition of the registration files.
