El Toqui - Sustainable Wind Farm Power

On September 23, 2011 the El Toqui Wind Farm was officially inaugurated by Chile´s Energy Secretary. Back in 2010, El Toqui mine took the lead in Chile´s renewable power generation in mining, by starting a project to erect 6 x 275 Kw turbines in a wind farm located close to the mine in the Chilean Patagonia, providing power directly to industrial installations.

Port Pirie. Ten for them

In February 2006, Port Pirie, together with key South Australian government and regulatory stakeholders, launched the tenby10 project. The goal was to reduce the blood lead levels of the city’s children. This has now been replaced by the Ten for them project as it proves Nyrstar’s ongoing commitment to the community blood lead reduction program at Port Pirie.

Ten for Them

Hobart. Derwent Estuary Program and groundwater recovery

The Nyrstar Hobart zinc works is located on the banks of the picturesque Derwent Estuary in southern Tasmania. The waterway is integral to the lifestyle of Hobart and is used both recreationally and commercially.

Balen and Overpelt. Soil and groundwater remediation

Balen and Overpelt are situated about 18 km apart in the northeast of Belgium. The sites were first established in the late 1880’s and their long operating history left a legacy of soil and groundwater impacts. These are now being addressed through a number of on-site and off-site projects

Auby. Remediation of on-site and off-site soils

The Auby smelter is located in the town of Auby in the north of France, approximately 35 km south of the city of Lille. The site was established in the late 1860s and historical operations have resulted in soil contamination on and around the site. It was remediated in 2009.

Budel. How the past ceases to be a burden for the future

Budel is situated in the southeast of the Netherlands, near the Belgian border. Zinc smelting activities have been conducted at the site since 1892. A program of works post-1993 has today transformed the site into a leading practice operation.

Clarksville. Land Management and Wildlife Habitation

During its nearly 30 years of existence, the Nyrstar zinc smelter in Clarksville, Tennessee has demonstrated that industry, farming and nature can thrive together. The original site, comprised of 600 acres, has been increased to roughly 1,600 acres by purchasing adjoining properties.
