Astrid Baeyens (25) has been working as a prevention advisor at Nyrstar Balen and Pelt since 31 May 2021. At these two sites she monitors the safety, health and well-being of more than 630 employees. ‘If I do my job well, it helps prevent accidents: which is what we’re aiming for.’

Astrid Baeyens chose Nyrstar because of the challenges that the job as a prevention advisor in an industrial company brings. The company culture and the way everyone does their job with pride were further reasons for selecting Nyrstar.

‘When I was waiting in the hallway for the start of my job interview, I was greeted kindly by everyone who passed me: that spoke volumes to me about the spontaneous atmosphere and job satisfaction here.’

Trust

Astrid is also attracted by the importance Nyrstar attaches to sustainability and the efforts it makes to further improve this: As a mayor player in the metal industry, Nyrstar focuses strongly on energy efficiency, including wind turbine and solar park projects on its own site. By investing in these, an employer demonstrates its concern for the well-being of its people.’

Astrid gets the most satisfaction from her job by increasing the safety and well-being of employees and by making this a subject of discussion.

From day one, my team mates were very open and willing to show me the ropes in the organisation: I also want to be that kind of colleague for new people.

‘It’s great when colleagues come to me with their own proposals to increase well-being and safety. This proves that prevention advice is supported by the entire organisation, and people trust me in my position.’

Pointing the way

In the coming years, she wants to grow further in her job and continue to focus on sharing knowledge and experience. ‘From day one, my team mates were very open and willing to show me the ropes in the organisation. I also want to be that kind of colleague for new people.’

Her head of department at the Nyrstar Balen and Pelt sites will shortly be retiring. Very likely Astrid will then grow into that position. ‘That will only increase the challenge, variety and satisfaction in my job,’ she concludes.
