Storm-windturbines on the Nyrstar site in Pelt appear on the horizon. Construction of wind turbines will take place in the coming weeks.

Pelt, May 4th 2021 — After a year of preparatory work, the wind turbines of the Storm wind park in Pelt will be erected as of this week. The gigantic parts were transported with exceptional transports during the past weeks.

The wind park that Storm is building in Pelt will consist of three wind turbines to the north of the Bocholt-Herentals canal. Two of the three turbines will be built on the terrains of zinc smelter Nyrstar and neighbouring company Velbo.

The wind turbines have a rotor diameter of 145 metres and a tip height of 170 metres. They are equipped with a software system based on radar data that detects when bird swarms are in the vicinity of the wind park. The wind turbines are then automatically stopped.

The work on the site in Pelt started in the spring of 2020. "During the past year, the roads, crane platforms, cabling and foundations have been constructed," says project manager Christophe Kinds of Storm. "Now it is time for the final phase of construction: the construction of the wind turbines themselves. At the end of April, the tower components, the blades and the nacelle were brought to the construction site by special transports. This week, we started the construction. If the weather is good, the three wind turbines will be up and running within a month."

Nyrstar's general manager Inge Schildermans: "As one of the largest zinc smelters in the world, we are taking significant steps in terms of sustainability. This innovative wind park in Pelt is fully in line with the solar and wind parks in which Nyrstar already participates today and which, on a sunny day, enable us to operate entirely on green power. Think of our factory as an electric car that emits virtually no CO2."

Once construction is complete, the wind turbines will undergo extensive testing. They will then be put into operation this summer.

The Storm wind park in Pelt will produce as much green power as an average consumption of about 8,000 households. Inhabitants of the municipality of Pelt and the city of Lommel were given the opportunity to directly invest in the wind turbines through the Storm CV cooperative. A total of 156 local residents made use of this opportunity.
