Our Local Communities

Our aim is to be a welcome and valued part of the communities in which we participate. As part of this, Nyrstar commits to:

Engaging with our stakeholders, to understand and respond to their expectations and maintain open and honest communications;

Investing in our communities by building goodwill and developing quality long term relationships that are important to our business; and

Respecting fundamental human rights and not participating in business activities that abuse human rights.

Nyrstar has a number of local community initiatives underway at operating sites.

Our Programs

In addition to the work we do in our local communities, we also fund our own internal Programs or external Programs that with within our approach to Corporate Social Responsibility and that further demonstrate our commitment to the Nyrstar Way.

Ten for them

The ‘Ten for them’ campaign in Port Pirie in South Australia aims to lower blood lead levels in the local children.

The program was established in 2006 in conjunction with key external stakeholders under the banner of Tenby10. Initially having a target to ensure at least 95% of local children between 0-4 were below 10 ug/dl by the end of 2010, Nyrstar has continued its commitment to improve its environmental performance further exploring opportunities to minimise emissions from site and its impact on the community.

Much has been achieved since the project lauch when just 49.6% of children had blood lead levels below 10ug/dl. At the end of 2010 this had improved to 72.35%. This is a trend that is continuing, with further significant improvements regularly being achieved.

The Nyrstar project continues under the name, Ten for them - and we remain committed to having every child in Port Pirie with a blood lead level of 10ug/dl or less and a sustainable future for Nyrstar and the community.

Right to Play

'Right to Play’ is a global initiative which is aimed at improving the lives of children by using the power of sport and play for development, health and peace.

In Peru, Nyrstar supports Right To Play in the development of a multi-faceted program that addresses not only the poorly-designed and sparsely-attended early-childhood education programs, but also tackles the low literacy and numeracy levels observed in elementary and secondary schools. The programs in Peru focus on six primary activities: teacher training, the integration of Red Ball Child Play and Early Child Play activities into regular school hours, Youth As Leader workshops and the execution of youth-designed events, parental capacity building, and advocacy work with the government.

To date, Right To Play Peru has seen a marked improvement in the literacy and numeracy skills of program participants.
