The end of October saw three new wind turbines in operation at Pelt, Belgium, have A tip height of 170 metres and a rotor diameter of 145 metres make the turbines, one of which is located at the Nyrstar site amongst the biggest in the country.
The wind turbines are equipped with a software system based on radar data that detects flocks of birds. If the flocks fly too close, the wind turbines will stop turning automatically.
Two of the three turbines are connected to Nyrstar’s electricity network, where the zinc smelter uses the electricity to produce the low-carbon zinc that customers are demanding more of.
‘At the beginning of next year we will also have eight new wind turbines at Nyrstar Balen,’ says Philip Eyckmans, Global Category Manager Energy at Nyrstar. ‘We currently have four turbines at our sites. These will be replaced with the latest models, and four new ones will be added along the boundary between Balen and Lommel.’
