Nyrstar welcomes five-year EPA licence for Port Pirie multi-metals facility

Friday June 30, 2023

Nyrstar Australia will continue to drive improved environmental performance over coming years as it welcomed the longer-term licence it has received from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) for its multi-metals processing facility at Port Pirie.

Nyrstar Co-CEO Dale Webb said the five-year EPA licence recognised the hard work of the entire Nyrstar team to markedly improve the Port Pirie site’s environmental performance over recent years as well as the strong plan the company has in place for the future.

“At Nyrstar Australia we make critical metals that the world needs for the green transition and a lower carbon future such as zinc, lead, copper and silver,” Mr Webb said.

“Over recent years we have had a strong focus on improving our environmental performance in all areas, and especially reducing lead-in-air concentrations.

“This new five-year licence gives us greater certainty as a business and demonstrates the significant improvements we have made over recent years as well as the strong plan we have in place for the future.

“I want to thank the entire team at our Port Pirie site for their continued hard work as we make metals critical for Australia and the world.”

Over the past four years, average lead-in-air concentration levels measured across Nyrstar’s monitoring network have reduced by 40 percent.

Nyrstar is progressing a new $23 million facility Product Recycling Facility, co-funded with the South Australian Government, that will store and mix intermediate production materials, and be built nearby to the plants involved in the next stage of our production processes to reduce movement on site.

Over the past three years, Nyrstar Port Pirie has operated on yearly licences.
